Using WS_FTP is an easy way to transfer files between your computer and your domain account. Pictured below are screen shots from WS_FTP, which is available for evaluation download from www.ipswitch.com.
When setting up your session properties for the first time, choose a profile name in the first box to distinguish this profile from any others you may have. Then enter the following: For "Host Name/Address:" enter 'yourdomain.com' or your IP address. NOTE: if you have just signed up, using your IP address may be the only way to connect until your domain name registration or change order fully propagates. For "Host Type:" you can leave the default setting of "Automatic Detect". For "User ID:" enter your username for your Control Center. For "Password:" enter your current Control Center password. You may leave 'account' and 'comment' blank. You may want to check the box for 'Save Pwd' to make future logins smoother. Save your session (click 'Apply' or 'Save' depending on your software version).
After connecting, you will see 2 window panes - the left represents files on your computer and the right shows files on the web server. When you first connect, you will be in the 'root' folder for your domain account.
All files need to be loaded into the 'domain-www' or 'www' folders. The 'www' folder is actually just a shortcut to the 'domain-www' folder, so uploading into either one is perfectly fine. To change folders in the right-hand pane, just double-click the appropriate one. NOTE: Many times we receive support requests about sites not working only to discover that the files were not uploaded to the correct location. Be careful not to upload to the root directory as the files cannot be seen by visitors from that folder, and will only take up space! When you double-click on the '<domain>-www' folder, you will see the following (below):
Here we are looking at the main folder for your web pages, 'domain-www'. You should see something similar to the above, namely the 'cgi-bin' and 'stats' folders. Note that all CGI or Perl scripts should be located in the CGI-bin subfolder, and will not execute from any other location. To upload files, first highlight the files on the left side of your screen (your computer) and hit the right arrow button (see below) to transfer them to your domain account.
NOTE: All HTML files and CGI/PERL scripts *must* be uploaded as ASCII format, not binary! The opposite is true for image files (.gif, .jpg) and any compiled code - these should be binary, not ASCII.
