FTP Information

Using Macromedia DreamWeaver 4

The first step in being able to publish with DreamWeaver is to properly define your site. Under the "Site" menu, choose "Define Sites". The following screen will appear:

The first Category is "Local Info" where you tell Dreamweaver about the location of the web files on your computer:

- Under "Site Name" choose a descriptive name for this site.
- Under "Local Root Folder" choose the main folder for your web files on your computer.
- Under "HTTP Address" enter the full URL of your web site on the server in the format http://www.yourdomain.com
- You can choose to enable a local cache which will speed up the functioning and processing of the local files.

Next, click the "Remote Info" Category to enter the information regarding your hosting account:

- Under "Access", select "FTP".
- Under "FTP Host" enter either your IP address or your domain in the format domain.com without the 'www' in front.
- Under "Host Directory" enter domain-www where 'domain' is your domain name without the 'www' or '.com'.
- Under "Login", enter your account username.
- Under "Password", enter your current Control Center password.
- You should not need to check any of the boxes on this screen unless you are behind a firewall. Consult your documentation and/or network administrator for more information on using FTP services through a firewall.
- For more information on "File Check-in and Check-out" refer to your Dreamweaver documentation.

Once you define these 2 categories you are ready to connect to your site. In the Site Files screen, click the "plug" icon to connect, or choose "Site - Connect". You should see the following screen appear:

Once connected, you can simply drag files from the right (your computer) to the left pane (the web server). You can also highlight files in either pane and click either the "Get" (download from web server) or "Put" (upload to web server). The "Get" button looks like a down arrow (see below) and the "Put" button looks like an up arrow.

When finished, you can click the connect/disconnect button (looks like a plug, see above) to end your session.
