The SpamAssassin tool "sniffs out" spam by analyzing the content of incoming email messages, giving each one a "spam score". It does this by running over 1,000 separate tests on each email, which find patterns of text, known spam phrases, and even searched the "blacklists" to see if the mail is coming from a known spam source. When the analysis concludes that a message is likely to be spam, SpamAssassin can be configured to alter the subject line of the suspect message. This makes it extremely easy to filter, either with SpamVault or your own email software.

Here is a list of the supplemental test sets we utilize with our version of SpamAssassin, along with the focus of each. Note: this is in addition to the default set which already contains hundreds of rules.

"Adult"	Adult content in subject and body, including deliberate attempts to obfuscate (hide) key phrases/text
"Antidrug"	Various pharmaceutical ads, including sexual performance, anxiety, weight loss medications and treatments
"Backhair"	Looks at body for words interrupted by bogus HTML tags (i.e. Hel<bad_tag>lo Ever<bad_tag>yone)
"BigEvil"	This is a blacklist of known spammers and spam domains.
"BizMarket"	Looks for certain marketing terms & phrases that are known components of spam
"ChickenPox"	Looks at body text for words broken up by bogus non-alpha characters such as: He$ll.o Eve^ry\|bo.dy
"Evilnumbers"	Another blacklist consisting of known spammer mailing addresses and phone numbers often included in spam.
"Fraud"	Catches several fraud emails including Ebay, PayPal and Citibank scams
"HTML"	Looks for bad HTML coding and patterns known to be found in spam
"Nigerian"	Catches the "Nigerian Scam" / "419 Scam" and others. (This is the one where the dictator's widow needs you to help her smuggle $10 million out of the country).
"Ratware"	Looks for known email programs (software signatures) used by spammers.
"Sa-Blacklist"	Another blacklist comprised of spammers and domains.
